ALL AGENCIES INVESTIGATE CANINE DEATHS 4-23-10

From Salmon Police Chief Jim Spain: The Salmon Police Department has been working closely with the many resources available to our community since the issue of “unexpected dog deaths began to appear in our community.”

To that end, our local veterinarians, Humane Society, Sheriffs Office, Idaho Fish and Game and Prosecutor’s Office, to name a few agencies, have all been working in a joint investigative effort to identify exactly what we are up against and how to stop these tragic deaths.

When and if we get to the point of identification of a possible offender(s), the goal of a successful prosecution effort will be undertaken for appropriately identified criminal charges.

We have been working on the assumption this is a premeditated act of an as yet unidentified person(s) within our community but we are keeping all investigative areas open for exploration.

We have worked closely with the news media to keep our citizens informed and will continue to do so. We are asking our community pet owners to continue to be extremely cognizant of their pet’s safety both when off their property and when on their property until this issue is resolved.

Our Sheriff’s Office dispatch will continue to receive any information anyone may have at 756-8980 or at our tip line at 756-4636.

If someone feels they have direct information as to the identity of the source of these deaths I do feel they need to speak directly to our primary investigator in this case which is Officer Leah Madsen.

I (Chief Spain) may also be contacted directly if someone has specific information.

It is also imperative that any suspicious circumstances you observe are passed on to Law Enforcement in a timely manner which includes any member of Law Enforcement in Lemhi County.

This has been an extremely high priority for all Enforcement agencies in our county since the deaths began, and we will continue to treat it as such until resolved.

We are a small, close knit community and this issue is weighing heavily on all of our community members.
