SPAIN REMOVED FROM DEPARTMENT 5-25-10

Chief Jim Spain has been dismissed as Chief of the Salmon City Police Department.

The action came Monday, May 24th after an emergency executive session of the Salmon City Council and Mayor John Miller. Five of the six councilmen attended the executive session and when the council came out of the meeting to conduct the official vote the count was four in favor of dismissal and one abstention. The four in favor constituted the majority of those in attendance.

Mayor Miller stated he would not discuss each detail leading to the situation but did say his personal working relationship and communication with Chief Spain had deteriorated to the point it was affecting getting things done. Due to the on-going conditions Miller said he felt it was time for a change.

The job of Chief of Police is an appointed position. Chief Spain was appointed by former Mayor Stan Davis with a majority approval from the council in office at that time. Miller said the Police Chief contract states the chief will serve at the pleasure of the mayor which gives the mayor the authority of dismissal as long as the majority of the council concurs.

The dismissal took effect immediately. In accordance with the contract Spain will receive three months pay.

The position of Police Chief will be filled on an interim basis by 15 year Police Department veteran Sergeant K.V. Felker.
