|CHILD DIES IN FIRE|
FIRE FATALITY 11-22-10 LMS
Four year old Skyler Hitesman died Saturday night, November 20th, as a result of a fire at the Imperial Apartments in Salmon.
When the Salmon Volunteer Fire Department reached the apartment complex flames were coming from the involved unitís rear windows as well as the front door of the two story apartment. Firemen were told a four year old boy was still in the apartment on the second floor. They were unable to reach him due to the intensity of the fire, dense smoke and extreme temperatures inside the structure. Around 11:50PM, after some control had been gained over the blaze, fire teams were able to locate the boyís body in a second floor bedroom. The child had apparently succumbed to smoke inhalation.
His grandmother was also on the second floor but was unable to reach her grandson before being overcome by smoke. She was transported by ambulance to Steele Memorial Hospital where she was treated for smoke inhalation.
Before being brought under control the fire spread to the attic of an adjoining apartment which necessitated removal of that apartmentís ceiling.
Firefighters remained on the scene performing mop-up operations until 3:30AM Sunday morning. Crews were called back to the scene at 7AM when law enforcement personnel noticed smoke coming from insulation in the second apartment. Fire personnel removed the insulation and searched the area for any left over smoldering embers.
The cause of the fire is not known and is under investigation. The Idaho State Fire Marshallís office will be providing assistance in determining the fireís origin.
