PARKS & RECREATION REPORT 4-6-11 LMS

Parks and Recreation Committee Chairman Jim Kluesner brought the Salmon City Council up to date on the committee’s March 23rd meeting.

He told the April 6th council meeting that the committee discussed what repairs need to be made to the Skate Park facility and how to do them. Kluesner said he will talk with Bob Wiederrick about what could or should be done with the barbecue pit on Island Park.

Registration for all city Summer programs has been scheduled to take place on May 16th and 17th. That includes sign ups for swimming classes and other recreational programs as well as activities at the Sacajawea Center/Outdoor School.

With preparations for the Summer season in mind, City Recreation Director Judy Barkley told the committee she would like to see a slide installed at the pool. An old diving board has had to be removed and she said the slide could be installed where the board was located. The slide would cost approximately $1,200. Barkley also said the sidewalk that runs from the swimming pool to the golf course needs to be repaired. Estimated cost on that project would be around $1,500.

The committee agreed it would ask the city if some of the LOT funds could be used for the projects and the question of LOT funding was discussed at the April 6th City Council meeting. It was decided the topic would be scheduled for further discussion during the council’s April 20th meeting.

Ron Jackson told the Parks and Recreation Committee that the Lemhi County Waterway Committee, which he chairs, intends to repair the boat ramp on the north end of Island Park. He said the project will be coordinated with City Parks Superintendent Charlie Cockrell in terms of what is being planned and what needs to be done. Jackson indicated some backhoe work may be required.

Arbor Day is Friday, April 29th. Kluesner presented a list of people to contact for anyone wishing to plant trees on city properties in honor of the event. For plantings on Island Park or at baseball fields contact City Parks Superintendent Cockrell. For plantings at the Sacajawea Center or near the swimming pool contact Recreation Director Barkley and for those wishing to plant trees at the golf course or at Kids Creek Pond contact City Councilman Fred Waidely.

The Parks and Recreation Committee meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month just prior to the Local Option Tax meeting. This month those meetings will take place on April 26th with the Parks and Recreation meeting at 4:30 in the afternoon and the LOT Commission meeting at 5:30. Both meetings will take place in the Salmon Valley Center meeting room and are open to the public.
