THE AGGRESSIVE GENERATION 10-5-11 LMS

The Salmon City Council October 5 Roundtable Discussion was all about the city’s deer herd.

Councilman Fred Waidely introduced the subject by commenting that since the city first began discussing the problem, several generations have been added to the herd. He said over time the deer have become quite domesticated and some appear to be growing very aggressive. He said he personally had to intervene when he witnessed a deer being aggressive towards his neighbor’s grandchildren. His neighbor, Mayor Leo Marshall, thanked him.

Waidely said he thinks the city is overpopulated with the animals and it’s time something be done about it to protect the citizenry. He said the city cannot solve the problem without cooperation from the local Idaho Department of Fish and Game and proposed the City Council demand that the department take action.

Councilman Jim Baker pointed out the city has never agreed on an approach to the problem and therefore has not indicated a preferred action to the F&G. Baker said there are different herd reduction options and the F&G will work with the city once the city decides which method to follow.

Mayor Marshall was a councilman when former Mayor Stan Davis first identified the deer herd numbers as a problem seven or eight years ago and set up a work session with Fish and Game Regional Supervisor Jim Lukens. Several alternatives were discussed however the bottom line was, and is, it is illegal to discharge a fire arm within the city limits or to trespass on ‘cultivated land.’ The possibility of a bow hunt had its own array of issues.

Marshall said he will contact F&G personnel and arrange for a deer herd discussion during the October 19 City Council meeting.
