NEW K-9 TRAINEES WELCOMED 1-30-12 LMS

On Thursday, January 26, members of the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office and Salmon Police Department drove to the Twin Falls, Idaho area, where two dogs were purchased for K-9 use.

Both canines are Belgian Shepherd dogs and are litter mates. The Belgian Shepherds are commonly known as Malinois (pronounced maelinwa).

The county K-9 trainee is named Beaux (pronounced “Bo”) He is a seven month old pup weighing approx 66 pounds. Beaux’s handler was Deputy Joe Moore of the Jerome County Sheriff’s Office from Paul, Idaho. The dog will be trained by Salmon Police Department Sergeant Terry Stratton in canine patrol, scent and article tracking and drug detection. The cost to the county was $1000 however, after training the dog will be valued at nearly $15,000.

According to Sheriff Bowerman, this was an opportunity to purchase a high quality animal at a very reasonable price and will be purchased through drug forfeiture money which is money seized during a drug arrest or commission of a drug crime. Bowerman said that Sergeant Stratton has offered his training services at no cost to the county, which is a win-win situation all around.

Beaux will be in training along with Deputy James Jensen and will be seen riding in the back seat of James’s Dodge truck.

Beaux’s brother “Junior” will be in training as the city’s police dog to replace “Lyka” the former Salmon Police Department K-9 officer who died suddenly December 23rd.

Both of the new dogs are being financed through the Byrne Grant drug forfeiture fund.

The Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois) ( /ˈmælɪnwɑː/) is a breed of dog, sometimes classified as a variety of the Belgian Shepherd Dog rather than as a separate breed. The Malinois is recognized in the United States under the name Belgian Malinois. Its name is the French word for Mechlinian, which is in Dutch either Mechelse herdershond (shepherd dog from Mechelen) or Mechelaar (one from Mechelen). These dogs are popular for K-9 use in police departments, as are German Shepherds
