DEER SURVEY 3-21-12 LMS

Local residents are going to have an opportunity to express their opinion about the deer that roam the city of Salmon.

At its March 14 meeting the city’s Public Safety Committee Team decided what survey questions would best serve to gain a true picture of the public’s opinion regarding the deer population.

According to a report to the Salmon City Council March 21 by Public Safety Team Chairman Ken Hill the committee recommended that when the Deer Survey is approved and printed, it be handed to people when they arrive at City Hall to pay their utility bills. The survey’s availability at City Hall will be announced on KSRA’s Voice of the Valley program. In addition, each City Councilman will have copies of the survey to give to interested residents.

Hill said it is felt that around 200 completed surveys would be a statistically significant barometer of public opinion and that personally handing them out would be far less expensive than trying to mail them.

Hill said the team feels the final survey should consist of ten questions which would only take a few minutes to answer. He provided a copy of the suggested survey to each member of the council.

Another subject at the Public Safety Team meeting was the number of criminal cases listed in the newspaper as ‘dismissed.’ Salmon City Police Chief KV Felker outlined the process followed when his department files a case. He said the outcome depends on many factors and he said in general he feels the process is being fairly carried out and meets public needs.

Hill said there was a brief discussion of combining the City Police Department and the County Sheriff’s Department. He said the consensus was there would be no substantial benefit to the city either in the form of services or in reduction of costs and added, he’s sure the topic is one the public will be hearing more often in the coming months.

The next meeting of the Public Safety Team is April 11 at 5:15 PM in the Salmon Valley Center meeting room.
