PUBLIC SAFETY TEAM MEETS NEW TRAINEES 6-20-12 LMS

Salmon City Councilman Ken Hill told the June 20 meeting of the City Council that at its last meeting the Public Safety Team met some very special future officers.

Hill said Sergeant Terry Stratton introduced the three young K9 trainees currently being schooled in detection of illegal substances and how to stop fugitives. The dogs are being trained by Stratton, Officer Leah Madsen and Officer James Jensen.

Hill said even though the trainees are very young the level of training is very impressive. He said the Public Safety Team thanked Stratton, Madsen and Jensen for all the hard work and long hours that go into training the magnificent animals.

In other busniness before the team Hill said Salmon Valley Chamber of Commerce President Charlene Hermosillo gave more details on her request for city approval of a wild west quick draw demonstration as part of the July 4th Salmon River Days celebration. Hill said that after review of the organizationís safety precautions, insurance protections and a general review of how activities are conducted Police Chief K.V. Felker gave his support to the event with the stipulation the cityís Firearms ordinance can be modified in time to make an exception to the ban on any discharge of firearms within city limits.

Later in the evening after a report on research into legalities by City Attorney Fred Snook, the council did in fact unanimously vote to waive the second and third readings of an amendment to the cityís Firearms Ordinance and pass the exceptions amendment. The amendment allows the wax bullet fast draw competition to take place and opens the way for a proposed paint ball event planned later this summer. The amendment states that any requested exceptions are subject to Police Chief and council approval Ordinance 12-783 will be further discussed in terms of other changes that seem appropriate.

Hermosillo then presented a permit request and upon the councilís vote of approval the Cowboy Fast Draw Association demonstrations became part of this yearís Salmon River Days. The fast draw events will take place July 6th and 7th in a protected area behind the Bear statue in the lot across from City Hall.
