HOCKEY ASSOCIATION IS GRANTED LOT FUNDING 11-7-12 LMS
The Salmon City Council has approved a request by the Salmon Hockey Association for $17,000 in Local Option Tax funding.
LOT Commission Chairman and Salmon City Councilman Jim Bockelman presented the Hockey Association request to the November 7 meeting of the City Council along with the commissionís recommendation that the request be granted.
In his LOT report he said the Hockey Association had requested $23,000 for extensive maintenance and repair work at the complex. Three projects were proposed involving rink maintenance and repair, refrigeration system work and upgrades to the public rink warming shed. He said the association has obtained $15,500 through donations and other funding sources which left a need for $23,000. That figure included labor costs which Bockelman said the LOT commission does not generally provide. The cost of materials needed amounts to $17,000 and that is the amount of funding the commission recommended.
Members of the council agreed with the LOT Commissionís opinion that the recreational hockey events bring a much needed economic boost to the community during winter months and supporting the rink improvements is a good investment.
During the final public comment period of the council meeting Hockey Association President Russ Cole thanked council members for approving the LOT funds and said without them the association resources would be stretched very thin.
Bockelman said the LOT Commission placed a Salmon Valley Racing request for funding to cover past and future expenses on hold until more information was made available for evaluation.
He said the commission is still seeking a workable plan to verify the numbers of people attending funded events. One method under consideration is having the funded entity include a final report in the required reimbursement form.
Revenues from the Local Option Tax have been generally ahead of last year in 2012 however that changed in August and September. August revenue totaled $13,167 which was down $895 from August 2011. Estimated revenue for September is a minimum of $10,000 and would be $1,967 less than the same month last year. Bockelman said there will be around $25,849 to carry forward into Fiscal Year 2013.
The next LOT meeting is scheduled for 5:30 PM, Tuesday November 27 at the Sacajawea Center.
