COMMUNICATIONS PLAN 2-6-13 LMS

At the February 6 City Council meeting, Salmon City Mayor Leo Marshall presented a suggested plan for communicating between city departments, residents, businesses and media in the event of an emergency.

He used recommendations from the Department of Environmental Quality then added a long list of local contacts. The need for a plan came to light when a non-emergency situation was blown out of proportion due to the lack of a proper communications tree and caused unnecessary upset among city residents. Marshall said the first step will be to determine if there is a problem by conferring with city staff. If there is indeed an emergency members of the City Council will be emailed and a press release written and distributed to newspapers, news web sites, radio and TV stations.

Marshall suggested that if residents would like to supply their email addresses people could be notified that way as well. Notifications would also be sent to Lemhi County Dispatch, County Emergency Services, the hospital, the health department, restaurants, the schools and care centers.

The council approved the emergency procedures outlined.

The Salmon Water Treatment Plant will be getting a new outlook with approval of a lighting retrofit. Through a partnership with Idaho Power and a $2,730 rebate available until March 31 the council voted to let the process begin. Annual savings due to the replacement lighting is estimated at $1,925.

It was also decided that the Public Works Team will discuss inviting the Army Corps of Engineers to come look at river conditions in terms of what is causing ice jam build ups near town that have only appeared in the past couple of years. The team has also been directed to begin working on the city’s Transportation Plan.

The Public Works Team will meet February 13 at 2PM in the Salmon Valley Center meeting room. The next meeting of the Salmon City Council will be February 20 at 6PM.
