VOLUNTEERS NEEDED 2-24-14 LMS
The Lemhi County Board of Guardians is looking for volunteers interested in becoming official protectors/conservators for people who have no relatives and are in need of assistance.
Duties vary from just making sure day to day activities such as grocery shopping, doctor’s appointments or living arrangements are handled to the actual conservatorship management of financial affairs including the monthly payment of bills.
Hope Benedict and Karen Baumert visited with the Lemhi County Commissioners Monday, February 24, and told them of the need for additional Board of Guardians members. The board acts through the auspices of Lemhi County and the County Commissioners are in charge of making appointments to the Board of Guardians. The service is on a volunteer basis and the number of people on the board can be anywhere from nine to 16.
Benedict said there have not been many conservatees in the program for the past few years. She said that is either good news or an indication there are people in need of assistance that are not being noticed.
When someone submits the name of a person they feel is in need of assistance to the Board of Guardians the person is first screened for eligibility. The process involves verification that there are no relatives willing or able to help and the financial status of any potential conservatee such as; income from trust funds, Social Security, Medicaid or disability. The court has the final say on which Guardian will be assigned which case.
Names of people who may be needing the type of assistance offered by the Board of Guardians may be submitted to County Social Services Director Sue Dickens and she will direct the information to the Board of Guardians. She can also outline the duties expected of board members as well as overall program details.
Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Lemhi County Board of Guardians may contact Dickens at 756-2815 extension 226 or Clerk of the Court Terri Morton at 756-2815 extension 221.
