SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED 5-22-14
The Jackie Caivano Memorial Scholarship winners for 2014 have been selected. This scholarship is sponsored by the Salmon-Challis National Forest employees by way of funds raised throughout the year.
This yearís winners are Sarah Spain (Salmon High School), Bailey Harwood (Challis High School), Samatha Fullmer (Mackay High School). Leadore High School did not have any graduating seniors pursuing a college education so an additional scholarship recipient was selected from the runner-up applicants. Duncan Swersey from Salmon High School was awarded the fourth scholarship.
Spain will be pursuing a criminology degree from the University of New Mexico, Harwood is going to major in nursing, specializing in Neonatology at the College of Southern Idaho, Fullmer will be working on her nursing degree at Idaho State University and Swersey will attend Boise State University this fall in the field of business.
The scholarship program was created in 1998 and was originally called the Salmon-Challis National Forest Employee Scholarship. It was renamed in 2000 in memory of Jackie Caivano, an employee who passed away due to an aggressive form of cancer in January 2000. Jackie was the Forest Supervisorís Executive Assistant.
The employees of the Salmon-Challis National Forest contribute to the fund raisers to support the students of area high schools. Each year at least two silent auctions and one live auction are held. The items auctioned are donated by the employees and from local businesses. They are then bid on by the employees.
Fifty-five individual scholarships with a total sum of $45,000 have been awarded since 1998. This year $4,000 was awarded (four - $1,000 scholarships) to high school students in Salmon, Challis, and Mackay.
Congratulations to all of our local 2014 graduates!
