TRANSPORTATION PLAN STILL MOVING FORWARD 5-27-14 LMS

Plans are in place for Lemhi Ride to take over local transportation needs.

Allen Howell, Chairman of the Lemhi County Economic Development Association (LCEDA) and LCEDA Executive Director Tammy Stringham met with the Lemhi County Commissioners Tuesday, May 27, to discuss the status of the Lemhi Ride Transportation project.

Howell said that he and Stringham have met with Lee Staker, a commissioner from Bonneville County and Chairman of the Targhee Regional Public Transportation Authority (TRPTA) to work on the process of changing local TRPTA transportation services to Lemhi Ride.

He said the first local step must be formation of a transportation board that will be comprised of County Commissioner John Jakovac, two or three representatives from the city, the hospital, local schools, assisted living centers and specific groups such as seniors, special education people and two or three people from the community at large. Howell hopes to have the board seated by mid-June. Once that is accomplished there will be a road trip to cities of similar size with successfully established transportation systems for the public. The nearest site will be Hamilton, Montana and another model system is located in Bonners Ferry.

Howell said there is an official Plan of Action which was used for the original Lemhi Ride grant. It will be used as a template and the boardís input will be sought before moving forward with the plan. He thinks LCEDA will chair the board just to get it started. The projected date for Lemhi Ride assuming the local transportation services now provided by TRPTA is April 1, 2015.

Stringham said Lemhi Ride is currently doing a good job of helping people get from place to place as needed which was its original purpose. Many of the rides are for older people tending to medical issues.

The commissionerís input was invited as the step by step process continues.
