FROM THE OFFICE OF SHERIFF LYNN BOWERMAN 8-14-14

The Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motorcycle crash vs. truck accident, yesterday, Wednesday, August 13th, after receiving a 911 call in dispatch at around 10:26 a.m.

According to the reporting party, the driver of the motorcycle was severely injured, but conscious and breathing. The Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office took the lead into the investigation and was assisted by Idaho State Police, who reconstructed the accident scene and will assist in determining the final cause of the crash.

According to the driver of the 2004 Freightliner truck, 23 year old Timon Aitken of Missoula, Montana, he was southbound on US Hwy 93 North at Hulls Gulch Road when the motorcycle driver of a 2008 Kawasaki indicated his intent to turn right on Hulls Gulch Rd. Aitkens proceeded to pass the motorcycle in a legal passing zone when the driver changed his signal to a left hand turn and turned in front of his truck.

Aitkens struck the motorcyclist driving over the motorcycle before coming to a stop off the left hand side of the roadway. There were no eye witnesses to the crash, however, numerous good Samaritans stopped at the scene to assist the motorcyclist after the accident including retired CHP officer Vern Bishop of Hulls Gulch.

The driver of the motorcycle, 20 year old Christopher Mayer also of Missoula, was transported to Steele Memorial Hospital pending life flight; however he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

The accident remains under investigation according to Sheriff Lynn Bowerman and will be turned over to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for his review however, no criminal charges are expected.

The Freightliner was towed to Salmon by Iron Horse, of Missoula, and will be inspected by the Commercial Division of ISP. The motorcycle was towed by Miracle Auto body of Salmon.
