BriAnne Bruno has been unanimously appointed to the City Planning and Zoning Commission.
Mayor Leo Marshall recommended her appointment at the August 20 meeting of the Salmon City Council. Council members were very complimentary about her on-going service to the community and welcomed her to the commission.
John McMahon of the Idaho Commission on the Arts introduced the council to the Public Mural Program. He said that as a member of the Arts Commission he provides technical support service to communities interested in undertaking public mural art projects which, with a 40,000 year history, are one of the oldest forms of art. McMahon said murals on community walls and ceilings are a part of cultures world-wide. He said the program has been used very successfully in places such as Philadelphia where it incorporated the graffiti artists into the community. The community can decide where to place a mural and for how long, the purpose of the muralís message and to whom it is directed.
Caroline Stivers is the moving force behind establishing a local mural program. Her proposal to the city is to place a mural at the Skate Park since it is a haven for young people and could be a positive creative outlet. Stivers said she would work with the city on what subject matter would be portrayed. She would like to see young people lead the mural program.
Stivers assured the council there will be no financial obligation required from the city and said all she is asking is its blessings to move forward with the public mural plan. The council unanimously gave Stivers an approval to proceed.
