PROSECUTING ATTORNEY REPORT 9-17-14
City Prosecuting Attorney Bruce Withers brought the Salmon City Council up to date at its September 17 meeting on the number of criminal cases prosecuted so far this year.
He said there has been a total of 134 criminal charges cases since January 1st plus some carry over cases from 2013 which are not reflected in the report. There have been 28 felony cases, 70 misdemeanor cases and 36 infractions of the law cases. Ten Juvenile cases have also been processed.
Withers explained why some cases are dismissed by using the example of the 12 dismissals listed under the heading of infractions. He said ten of the cases had to do with either no vehicle insurance or an expired registration. Withers said in instances where no accident is involved time is given for obtaining proof of insurance or registration. He said the goal is not to collect fines or penalties; it is to get people insured or registered.
Withers encouraged council members to call him with any questions and said he’d be happy to explain specific cases and/or specific actions taken or not taken. In reference to the Exceptional Service award presented earlier to Detective Madsen Withers said, “Leah does a great job. I really appreciate her.”
