GRAVEL PIT CLOSURE ANNOUNCED 2-6-15
The Salmon-Challis National Forest (SCNF) has determined that the Votler Pit on the Granite Mountain Road (FSR 60092) is nearing depletion, and will be closing the pit to public use on March 1, 2015. Records indicate that the Votler Pit was used as early as 1960, although it was officially appropriated as a minerals disposal site by the Forest Service in 1971. This community pit has served the public for nearly 50 years.
The Forest Service expanded the pit in 2007, at which time it was estimated that 15,000 to 20,000 cubic yards remained. Since the pit expansion, permits have been issued for removal of 12,500 cubic yards. In 2010, the Central Idaho Resource Advisory Committee funded $20,000.00 for stripping of overburden from the northern portion of the pit expansion area, to make material more accessible to pit users.
Remaining material in the pit will be used to meet the SCNF’s demand for in-service needs in the North Fork area. Once in-service use has depleted the remaining reserves, the Forest Service will reclaim the pit. Forest Service Manual direction (FSM 2850.3) requires that the Forest Service “not allow disposals of mineral materials for external use if there are not enough probable reserves to meet estimated in-service demand.” The SCNF may issue permits on a case-by-case basis for cobble or other materials in the Votler pit. Please contact Julie Hopkins at 208-756-5279 to determine if a permit is possible.
Gravel of the quality found in Votler is not common, but the SCNF is working to identify potential replacement sources. If or when other sources of gravel are located, the SCNF will analyze development of the proposed location as required by the National Environmental Policy Act, and proceed with pit development following environmental analysis.
Other community use sites have available material, although of lesser quality. These sites include the following:
Pit Name Type of Material Location Lick Creek Riprap FSR 60076 (North Fork RD) Squaw Creek Riprap, crusher FSR 60039 (North Fork RD) Salmon River Ranch River Road ditch cleanings FSR 60030 (North Fork RD) Perreau Creek Riprap FSR 60027 (Salmon-Cobalt RD) Wallace Creek Riprap FSR 60129 (Salmon-Cobalt RD) Twelvemile Riprap FSR 60014 (Salmon-Cobalt RD) Additionally, commercial sources of material are available, as well as material from Bureau of Land Management community use sites.
