PARKS & SAFETY TEAMS MEET 5-20-15 LMS

Salmon City Councilman Rob Jackson updated the City Council May 20 on the latest meeting of the city’s Parks and Recreation Team.

The first item discussed was a need for some work at the city’s North entrance sign at the intersection of Highway 93 North and Courthouse Drive. He said weeds in the area should be trimmed and either more bark should be added or the bark already there redistributed.

Jackson said special attention is being paid to the City Cemetery by City Parks Foreman Gordon Stevenson and Leonard Hatch to make sure it is ready to welcome Memorial Day visitors.

The team discussed the possibility of hiring a horticulturist to lend advice on plants and trees in the parks. That discussion will be continued. Jackson also commented that a number of citizens have brought the team’s attention to the recent use of the Island Park Bridge by River Fest participants. He said that bridge is not to be used because it has been condemned. He said another ‘bridge closed’ sign needs to be placed on the Island Park side of the bridge.

Councilman Ken Hill is Chairman of the city Public Safety Team which at its last meeting discussed the speed limit on Court House Drive. Hill said that given the amount of pedestrian traffic around the Court House and Episcopal Church, the angled parking and the steepness of the hill the team feels the 20 mile per hour speed limit should remain in place.

Whether or not new ordinances are needed regarding public urination and public drunkenness was another topic of discussion. Police Chief KV Felker and Police Sergeant Terry Stratton were asked to research policies in other communities of this size. They will report their findings and give recommendations on possible changes or additions to city code.

Both teams will be meeting on the afternoon of June 10 at City Hall. Parks and Recreation will meet at 3:30 and the Public Safety Team at 5:15.
