Temporary Closure of Newland Ranch Human Waste Disposal site 7-15-15

The Salmon Challis National Forest wants to inform river users and campers with travel trailers of an upcoming temporary shutdown of the Newland Ranch Human Waste Disposal site. The SCAT machine/trailer dump located at the Newland Ranch Human Waste Disposal site will be closed for repairs on July 28th and 29th. During repairs the site will be closed to all human waste dumping including travel trailers and river porta toilets or “groovers”.

Due to mechanical failures, the holding vault pumps at the site have been offline for several weeks which has forced the Forest to have the vault pumped almost daily. Daily pumping incurs significant cost to the River Fee Program. The repairs that will occur on July 28th and 29th will allow the system to resume working as designed and pump the waste to the associated settling ponds. Following the repairs, the Forest hopes to have the facility up and running by July 30th.

Travel trailers will need to seek out dump stations in the town of Salmon, Idaho or beyond. The Forest has worked to set up a temporary site near Salmon in which river users can manually clean out porta toilets into a hopper and vault system. Directions to the temporary location are as follows:

From North Fork Idaho drive 17 miles south on hwy. 93. Turn right onto Diamond Creek Road (turnoff to Lemhi County Fairgrounds). Follow the Diamond Creek Road and Road signs 2 miles to the BLM Morgan Bar Campground.

A temporary porta john cleaning station has been set up in the first concrete building on the left hand side of the wide entrance area to Morgan Bar Campground. The set-up is a manual rinse and dump station using a hopper and vault system. Users will need to rinse and dump their porta johns by hand at this site.

More information about the temporary accommodation for river users can be obtained by calling the North Fork Ranger District at 208-865-2700, the Middle Fork Ranger District at 208-879-4101, or the Public Lands Center in Salmon at 208-756-5100.
