The Salmon-Challis National Forest detected an additional fire Tuesday afternoon in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness on the North Fork Ranger District as a result of Monday’s thunderstorm.
The Elkhorn Fire is estimated at four (4) acres and is located west of Clear Creek and north of Elkhorn Creek approximately 3.5 miles from the wilderness boundary. The fire is burning in grass, brush, dead and down trees.
Resources currently staffing the fire are four fire-fighters and two helicopters. The helicopters are supporting the firefighters with bucket drops. The helicopters may be observed dipping out of the main stem of the Salmon River. Smokejumpers from McCall have been ordered to help with suppression actions and were expected to be on scene Tuesday night. .
