Eleven Mile Fire Evening Update 8-25-15

There will be a public meeting to discuss the Eleven Mile Fire on Wednesday, August 26th at 7:00 p.m. at the Challis Middle School Auditorium. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Date of Detection: August 24, 2015

Current Size: 2,000 acres

Location: 17 miles West of Challis, Idaho

Cause: Undetermined

Containment: 0%

Remarks:

The fire experienced extreme fire behavior today. The fire made a push to the north and northeast towards McKay Creek where it became well established as the day progressed. Fire suppression tactics will be strategically developed based on the risk that is created due to rough terrain, heavy fuel loading, presence of standing dead component and very limited access. Public and fire fighter safety is of upmost importance.

A Type 3 Team from Nevada (Hecht, Incident Commander (IC)) was in briefed at 1800 and will take over the fire at 0600 Wednesday, August 26th . Great Basin Team 5 (Whalen, IC) will take command of the Fire Friday, August 28th.

There will be an increase in shower coverage tomorrow as a storm moves in from the southwest. However, forecasts indicate isolated thunderstorms due to extensive cloud cover ahead of this system. Gusty winds will be a risk with stronger cells that develop. Thunderstorms are expected to continue for the rest of the week. This fire is ever evolving, therefore to obtain the most current information available, contact Salmon-Challis National Forest offices, or fire information sources.

An Emergency Area Closure is in effect and includes the following roads, campgrounds and all areas within to provide protection to forest visitors. Complete closure information, including maps will be made available soon.
