|FIRE NEAR CHALLIS GROWS|
ELEVEN MILE FIRE UPDATE 8-28-15
Significant fire activity took place in the northern areas of the fire. Extreme fire behavior established the fire in the Mill Creek, Tenmile Creek, Twelvemile Creek and the Yankee Fork Creek area referred to as Yankee Fork Meadows as well as near Summit Rock. The Sheep Creek drainage saw significant activity. A smoke column was prevalent most of the afternoon, with an impressive showing in surrounding communities.
Today, Great Basin 5 (Whalen) Incident Management Team (IMT) will be briefed on the Elevenmile Fire from Nevada’s Type 3 (Hecht) at 10:00 a.m. Whalen’s team will take over command of the fire at 6:00 a.m. Saturday, August 29. Assigned resources will be placed in the vicinity of Sheep Creek for area assessment and Eightmile drainage to prep and assess historical features located there. Fire managers are expecting very active fire behavior today. Above all, the most important objective for fire managers is to provide for firefighter and public safety.
Fire weather indicates another critical day for the Elevenmile Fire, with gusty winds this afternoon and getting stronger throughout the night. A Haines Index of 5 suggests more plume dominated fire potential during the afternoon burning period. Areas of smoke will be present.
