HUGHES CREEK TREE WELLS 3-4-16

The North Fork Ranger District is preparing to begin implementation of the Hughes Creek Unit 4 Old Growth Tree Well Prescribed Fire Project near Gibbonsville in the next few weeks. The District anticipates tree well burning will occur on approximately 533 acres utilizing local Forest personnel

This prescribed fire project is located in Lemhi County, 8 miles NW of North Fork, ID and 5 miles SW of Gibbonsville, ID on the west side of Highway 93 and north of Forest Road 93 (Hughes Creek Road). Implementation could start as early as March 9th, 2016 and will continue as weather allows through March and in to early April. Smoke will likely be visible for several weeks in the project area. During this time Highway 93, forest roads in the vicinity, and the community in and around Gibsonville will also experience smoke impacts from the prescribed fire.

The primary objective of tree well burning is to gradually reduce the accumulation of needles and other debris at the base of large trees. This will help promote deeper tree rooting and resistance to fire in the future. The project will also help promote Forest resiliency by reducing the potential effects from wildfire while helping to restore conditions in a fire-adaptive ecosystems. This project will also reduce the hazards to wildland firefighters while responding to future fires in the area, it will improve the ability of firefighters to safely suppress fires, and increases ability of fire personnel to successfully protect communities within wildland-urban interface areas like Gibbonsville and North Fork.

Prescribed fire operations will occur when weather conditions will help disperse smoke as much as possible. Signs will be posted in the burn areas to notify visitors that burning is in progress.

If you have any questions regarding this project you may contact Ken Gebhardt, North Fork District Ranger at 208-865-2731.
