|IN HONOR OF VETERANS|
MEMORIAL PARK 4-20-16 LMS
A formal request to rename Town Square Park and designate it as a memorial to veterans of the armed forces has been placed before the Salmon City Council by Fred and Sue Waidely.
In making the request at the April 20 Council meeting Sue Waidely said according to the County Veteran Services officer there are over 2,000 registered veterans in Lemhi County. The Waidelys would like to see a Veterans Memorial Park to officially honor the service all veterans have given and show the community’s appreciation. She said she would like it to be a city/county project. Sue said the grounds were donated by the Cavaness family however the family has no desire to have the park named after them and she is not sure that “Town Square Park” has ever been official. Nevertheless she thinks the park would be an ideal place for a memorial.
Fred Waidely is a veteran of 20 years in the submarine service and he said a memorial park would mean a lot to our local veterans. He said he has spoken with members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Viet Nam Veterans of America and members of the American Legion and all are in favor of a memorial.
Waidely said city crews already maintain the Town Square grounds and an administrative name change would involve no cost to the city. He said any construction such as an arch with emblems of all branches of the armed forces would be provided by the veterans. The Waidelys believe a Veterans Memorial Park would be a positive thing for the city and generate good feelings to all who live here or visit here.
A Veterans Memorial Park was suggested in 2014 and discussed with the city’s Parks and Recreation Team which requested an official proposal be put together however nothing resulted from the meeting. Councilman Rob Jackson said the Parks and Recreation Team would be happy to consider the name change request and Veteran’s Memorial Park proposal at the team’s May 11 meeting which will take place at 3:30PM in the City Hall Conference Room.
