Comet Fire on North Fork Ranger District 7-27-16



The Comet Fire was reported at 1: 30 pm Tuesday after a lightning storm moved through the area. At 6:30 pm the fire was approximated at 300 acres. The Forest initially attacked using two loads of retardant, and one medium helicopter doing bucket drops. There are currently four helitack crew members from the Salmon Helibase and one medium helicopter doing bucket drops on the fire.

There is a 20 person crew and heavy helicopter from Bozeman. The Forest has also requested an additional crew and an additional helicopter.

Firefighters reported isolated torching and currently burning in grass and lighter fuels.

“We are working closely with the Lemhi County and North Fork Fire Departments and the County Search and Rescue to make certain everyone is safe and informed about the fire.” stated District Ranger Ken Gebhardt.
