BOWERMAN HONORED 10-24-16 LMS

The Lemhi County Commissioners have presented their thanks and a Plaque of Appreciation to retiring Sheriff Lynn Bowerman. The presentation was made on October 24 during the board’s bi-monthly meeting.

Bowerman has been the county’s sheriff for the last six years. He first became sheriff when he was appointed to fill the remaining two years of a vacated term. Towards the end of that term he ran for office and in November of 2011 he was successful in his bid for a four year term as Lemhi County Sheriff.

Bowerman’s official retirement begins as of October 30.

According to state code, the Lemhi County Republican Central Committee may appoint a new sheriff within 15 days after a sheriff leaves office and prior to the next general election. In this case the time between Bowerman’s retirement and the next general election is only nine days. Bowerman asked the Central Committee to appoint Chief Deputy Steve Penner to fill the nine day vacancy.

The Republican Central Committee met on Monday morning then hand-delivered its letter of recommendation to the County Commissioners. The letter stated the committee has reviewed Idaho Code and would like to put forth the name of Steve Penner for the office of sheriff because the committee members believe him to be the best qualified for the office and because he is the only one running in the upcoming election. The commissioners amended the day’s agenda to include the Republican Central Committee’s letter of recommendation.

As previously mentioned, long time law enforcement officer Penner is unopposed on the November 8 ballot and on Monday, October 24, the commissioners named Penner as Acting Sheriff.

For those who vote absentee, the week of October 24 is the last week to request an absentee ballot by mail and November 4 is the last day to vote absentee.
